Fixed Wireless: Selling the Spare CapacityNarrow moat

Verizon (VZ) — moat facet

Fixed wireless turns C-Band's spare capacity into home internet for 6.2 million customers without digging a trench, but it can only grow where the phone network has room.

Fixed wireless access is what a carrier sells when its network has more capacity than its phones use. Verizon provides it "through our fifth-generation (5G) or fourth-generation (4G) Long-Term Evolution (LTE) networks as an alternative to traditional landline internet access"1. It had 5.7 million such connections at the end of 20252 and 6,208 thousand by 30 June 2026, up 21.4%3.

Verizon fixed wireless access revenue ($M)2,13920242,9402025Verizon Q4 2025 results release, total wireless supplemental information
Revenue up 37% in a year, still about 2% of the total.

The revenue is growing fast from a small base. FWA revenue was $2,139 million in 2024 and $2,940 million in 20254, up 37.4%5. Consumer had 3,407 thousand FWA connections and Business 2,320 thousand at the end of 20256.

The economics are attractive because the network already exists. No trench is dug and no fibre laid; a receiver goes in the window and the connection rides spectrum Verizon has already paid for. The C-Band auction's return, argued on C-Band: Fifty-Three Billion Dollars of Airwaves, depends partly on this product.

The limit is the same airwaves. Every home on fixed wireless uses capacity that phones also want, so the product can only grow where the network has room. Verizon's plan pairs it with fibre: total broadband connections were 17,121 thousand in June 2026, of which 10,913 thousand fibre7.

The Starry purchase in January 2026 extended the product into apartment buildings: Starry is "a fixed wireless broadband provider serving multi-dwelling units in five markets across the U.S."8. The 10-K explains how the product works: "FWA enables fixed broadband access using radio frequencies instead of cables"9, which is why it can be sold anywhere the network has room, without a construction crew.

The growth is already slowing. FWA net additions were 193 thousand in the June 2026 quarter against 278 thousand a year earlier10. Below 150 thousand a quarter, either the spare capacity or the customers will be running out.

Moat trajectory: Widening

FWA connections 6.2M at June 2026, up 21.4%; revenue up 37.4% in 2025.

The number that tests this moat
Reported
Fixed wireless connections, latest quarter
6,208 thousand (30 June 2026), up 21.4%; net adds 193 thousand in Q2 2026 against 278 thousand

How much spare capacity is being sold; net adds below 150 thousand a quarter would say it is running out.
