⚠ Business Customers Leave FasterModerate threat

Verizon (VZ) — threat to the moat

Verizon's business phone customers left at 1.23% a month in 2025, a third faster than consumers, and business net additions halved.

The churn average hides a business customer base that is less loyal. Business postpaid phone churn was 1.10% in 2024 and 1.23% in 20251, against 0.83% and 0.92% for Consumer2. A business customer is a procurement department, and procurement departments put contracts out to tender.

Business churn is a third higher and rising.

Business postpaid phone net additions fell from 501 thousand in 2024 to 225 thousand in 20253, while Consumer's rose from 82 thousand to 137 thousand4. The segment that was carrying the growth lost half of it in a year.

The pattern fits the rest of the Business segment, whose Enterprise and Public Sector revenue fell 10.2% in two years56, a decline argued on Enterprise and Public Sector: Down a Tenth. Large customers negotiate hard and switch in blocks.

Business also carries most of the subsidised phones that remain: the 10-K notes that while Consumer moved away from subsidised plans, "we continue to offer subsidized plans to our Business customers"7. A subsidised business line that leaves before the subsidy is recovered costs more than a consumer line leaving at the same rate.

If Business postpaid phone churn is above 1.25% for 2026 again, the segment will be buying its phone additions with discounts that the churn then gives back.
