⚠ Paid For, Not Yet Earned BackModerate threat
Verizon (VZ) — threat to the moat
C-Band's $53 billion sits on the books at cost and never amortises, so the only evidence of what it earns is a return on capital that fell from about 10% to about 7%.
Spectrum licences have a quiet accounting feature: they are not amortised. The C-Band airwaves bought for about $53.0 billion1 stay on the balance sheet at cost, inside wireless licences of $158,159 million at 30 June 20262. Only an impairment test would bring the number down, and a licence carried at cost can be earning very little before that test fails.
So the return has to be read in the income statement, and there the answer is not yet in. Verizon's return on invested capital averaged about 10.4% over 2015 to 2019 and about 7.0% over 2021 to 202534. Part of the fall is the one-off $5.8 billion goodwill impairment of 20235, but the rest is the denominator: a larger pool of capital earning roughly the same operating income.
Verizon's defence is that C-Band is what made fixed wireless broadband possible at scale, with FWA revenue up 37.4% to $2,940 million in 202567. That is real, and it is about 2% of revenue8.
The capitalised interest that hid part of the cost is running off. Total capitalised interest fell from $963 million in 2024 to $740 million in 20259 as more C-Band licences were placed into service, and each dollar that stops being capitalised lands in interest expense instead. That is why 2025 interest expense rose to $6,694 million even though average debt fell10.
The test is a return that climbs back. If return on invested capital is still below 8% in 2027, with the C-Band network fully in service and the capitalised interest gone, the auction will have cost more than it earned.
