Verizon (VZ) — threat to the moat

Verizon's service revenue per postpaid line was about $46.49 a month in 2025, 16 cents more than in 2024, so the franchise grew by adding lines, not by charging more.

A franchise with pricing power raises the price of the thing it sells. Verizon's revenue per postpaid line did not rise in any meaningful way in 2025: ARPA of $170.62 over 3.67 lines is about $46.49, against $167.26 over 3.61 lines, about $46.33, a year earlier12.

ARPA rose in 2025 and fell back in 2026.

That is after several years of plan price rises and fee increases. It is also why the company's own headline measure has changed: guidance now leads with "mobility and broadband service revenue", while "service revenue growth will be approximately flat in 2026" for wireless3. A company does not stop featuring a number that is growing.

The 10-K explains the pressure: competitors offer "increased levels of promotions and service plan discounts, price locks and guarantees"4. Price locks, which Verizon also offers, are a promise not to use pricing power.

The first half of 2026 made the point sharper. ARPA was $167.50 against $170.30 a year earlier5, down 1.6%6, in the half when postpaid phone net additions turned positive7. Volume came back and price went the other way, which is the trade the turnaround chose.

Revenue per line under $46 in 2026, with lines per account no longer rising, would mean the franchise had lost the only lever that grew ARPA.
