BusinessThin moat

Verizon (VZ) — moat facet

Business is 21% of Verizon's segment revenue and 8% of its segment profit, shrinking at the enterprise end and pruning itself into a better margin.

Business is the smaller and weaker of Verizon's two segments. Its revenue was $29,069 million in 20251, about 21% of the two segments' revenue, and its operating income $2,532 million, 7.9% of the segment total23. It sells wireless and wireline services to "Enterprise and Public Sector, Business Markets and Other, and Wholesale" customers4.

Small business grew while large institutions and wholesale shrank.

What is inside. In 2025 Enterprise and Public Sector brought in $13,532 million, Business Markets and Other $13,555 million and Wholesale $1,953 million5. Service and other revenue was about $25.4 billion and wireless equipment about $3.7 billion6. On the 2026 presentation, 2025 Business mobility and broadband service revenue was $14,940 million7. Business had 2,320 thousand fixed wireless connections at the end of 20258.

History. The segment's wireline roots are old: private networks, voice and data circuits for large companies and governments. That revenue has been declining as customers move to internet-based services. In 2023 Verizon recorded a goodwill impairment of about $5.8 billion on the Business unit, whose goodwill had been about $7.5 billion9. In June 2026 it agreed to put the international wireline business into a joint venture with BT10, and from the second quarter it moved that business to Corporate and other, restating the June 2025 quarter's Business revenue from $7,275 million11 to $6,973 million12.

How it is paid. Contracts, often multi-year, with large customers; monthly plans for small businesses; wholesale access for other carriers. Some Business wireline contracts carry minimum fees running to 2053, with aggregate minimum payments of $1.3 billion13.

Profitability. The operating margin was 7.0% in 2024 and 8.7% in 2025, and the segment EBITDA margin 21.6% and 22.9%14. Business carries $9,717 million of centrally managed network and shared service costs15, about 35% of the shared total on about 21% of segment revenue16, which depresses its reported margin.

Growth. Revenue was $30,122 million in 2023, $29,531 million in 2024 and $29,069 million in 202517, down 3.5% over two years18. Enterprise and Public Sector fell 10.2% while Business Markets and Other rose 6.8%19. Business postpaid phone net additions fell from 501 thousand in 2024 to 225 thousand in 2025, and postpaid phone churn rose to 1.23% from 1.10%20.

Outlook. The June 2026 quarter was a strong one: revenue up to $7,155 million from the restated $6,973 million, operating income up 36.9% to $991 million and segment EBITDA margin 29.1% against 24.7%21. Part of that is pruning, part is the cost programme, and the chief executive hopes part will come from AI infrastructure, argued on AI Infrastructure: A Claim Without a Number.

The segment's fourth quarter of 2025 was weak: segment EBITDA was $1,619 million against $1,655 million a year earlier22. Its cost base in 2025 included $5,046 million of wireless equipment costs, $9,717 million of shared network and service costs and $7,662 million of other segment expenses23, with depreciation and amortisation of $4,112 million24. The international business going to the BT venture is about $302 million of revenue a quarter25.

Business's phone base is smaller and looser than Consumer's. It added 225 thousand postpaid phones in 2025 against 501 thousand in 202426, and its postpaid phone churn of 1.23% compares with 0.92% in Consumer27. The segment also carries 2,320 thousand fixed wireless connections28, sold to small businesses as a quick alternative to a wired line.

The verdict is thin. Another like-for-like revenue decline in 2026 would show the better margin came from cutting a business that still is not growing.

Moat trajectory: Narrowing

Revenue down 3.5% from 2023 to 2025; Q2 2026 margin up on pruning.

Whether the segment grows at all; another like-for-like decline in 2026 would mean the margin came from cuts.
