The Postpaid Phone BaseWide moat

Verizon (VZ) — moat facet

Verizon's 94 million postpaid phones churn at under 1% a month and pay for the whole company, but they have stopped paying more.

Verizon's customers are its moat. The company had 94,098 thousand retail postpaid phones on 30 June 20261, on about 34.2 million accounts, and they leave at fewer than one in a hundred a month2. They pay a monthly bill for a service they use every hour, and most of them could not say what it would cost to switch.

Up 0.6% in eighteen months.

The base pays for everything. Wireless service revenue was $83,703 million in 20253, 60.6% of consolidated revenue4, and most of it flows through the Consumer segment, whose operating income was 92.1% of the two segments' total56.

The four pages below test the base. Ninety-Four Million Postpaid Phones is its size and growth. Churn Under One Percent is its stickiness. Three Point Six Seven Lines a Family is the account structure that holds it together. TracFone and the Prepaid Brands is the looser tier beneath it.

The weakness is growth. Wireless service revenue rose 2.0% in 20257, and the company guides it to be "approximately flat in 2026"8. Postpaid accounts fell 1.2% in the year to June 2026910. A franchise can be wide and still shrink, if it defends its customers by giving back price.

The fourth quarter of 2025 was the turn. Postpaid phone net additions were 616 thousand against 504 thousand a year earlier11, the first quarter under Schulman, whose stated aim was plain: "Verizon will no longer be a hunting ground for our competitors"12. The first half of 2026 brought 239 thousand net additions against a loss of 298 thousand13.

The facet is wide. What would narrow it is the combination the turnaround risks: churn back above 1% a month with ARPA still falling, which would mean Verizon was paying more to keep customers and keeping fewer.

Moat trajectory: Holding steady

Churn 0.92% and net adds positive in 2026; ARPA down 1.4%.

The number that tests this moat
Reported
Retail postpaid phone connections, latest quarter
94,098 thousand (30 June 2026), from 93,868 thousand at end-2025

The size of the franchise; a fall below 93.5 million would mean the turnaround's additions have reversed.
