Verizon (VZ) — threat to the moat

Verizon's record margin came from cutting people and phone subsidies, savings that improve the margin once and then need revenue growth to continue.

The June 2026 margin record was built from savings that do not repeat. Headcount fell 9.7% in 202512. Equipment revenue fell 19.7% as subsidies were cut3. The upgrade rate fell from 3.6% to 2.6%4. Each of those improves the margin once.

Profit rose on falling revenue.

What the margin needs from here is revenue. Consolidated revenue fell 0.7% in the June 2026 quarter to $34,253 million5, and grew 1.0% in the first half6, with Frontier inside the 2026 figures. The company's guide for adjusted EPS growth of 6.0% to 7.0%7 depends on costs continuing to fall faster than revenue.

Frontier pulls the other way for now: it added people, taking employees back to 97.6 thousand8, and the integration savings it promises are not quantified in the quarterly releases.

The guidance assumes more improvement. Free cash flow is guided at $21,940 million to $22,140 million for 2026, growth of 9.0% to 10.0%9, and operating cash flow at $37,940 million to $38,640 million10. With revenue close to flat, most of that has to come from cost and working capital rather than sales.

If adjusted EBITDA grows slower than 2% in 2027, after the cuts are fully in the base, the margin will have stopped rising and the turnaround will need a revenue story it does not yet have.
