Fibre and the HomeNarrow moat
Verizon (VZ) — moat facet
Frontier made Verizon a fibre company in 31 states, a bet that phones and home internet on one bill churn less, but fibre on its own earns a steady return, not a monopoly one.
Fibre is the part of the moat Verizon is buying rather than inheriting. The Frontier acquisition closed on 20 January 20261, and fibre now reaches "over 30 million homes and businesses"2 in 31 states and Washington3. With Fios and fixed wireless, the company had 17,121 thousand broadband connections by June 20264.
Fibre is a narrow moat on its own. A second trench down the same street would split the same customers, so the first builder has an edge. That is why Fios has held its revenue near $11.7 billion for two years5 even as video left. But fibre earns a steady return, not a monopoly one.
The real bet is convergence: phones and home broadband sold together churn less than either alone. The chief executive credits the "Verizon One converged offerings" for the Q2 2026 results6.
The four pages below test it. Frontier: $22 Billion for Fibre is the purchase. Fios Revenue Flat at $11.7 Billion is what mature fibre earns. Two Million Passings a Year is the build. Seventeen Million Broadband Homes is the base for convergence.
The fibre network is being extended by partnership as well as construction. In October 2025 Verizon entered "a commercial fiber arrangement with an affiliate of Tillman Global Holdings to further increase our fiber access reach"7, and in January 2026 it bought Starry for apartment buildings8. Fibre connections rose to 10,913 thousand by June 2026, up 43.3%9.
The facet is narrow and widening. What would falsify it is the phone churn inside converged households, which the company does not yet disclose; the visible proxy is postpaid phone churn overall. Churn above 1% a month while broadband connections grow would mean the bundle is not doing the work it was bought to do.
Fibre connections 10.9M, up 43.3%, after Frontier.
How fast the home base grows; below 300 thousand for two quarters would slow the convergence bet.
