A 40 Percent EBITDA MarginNarrow moat
Verizon (VZ) — moat facet
Verizon's adjusted EBITDA margin reached a record 40.1% in mid-2026, earned by selling fewer subsidised phones and employing fewer people, not by growing.
The cost programme has a headline number, and it is a record. "Consolidated adjusted EBITDA 1 margin grew from 37.1 to 40.1 percent, the highest the company ever reported"1, on adjusted EBITDA of $13,723 million, up 7.2%2. For the whole of 2025, adjusted EBITDA was $49,997 million3, 36.2% of revenue4.
Three things drove it. Fewer employees, after the 13,000-position cut. Fewer subsidised phones, which shrank revenue and cost together. And lower customer acquisition and retention costs, which the chief executive credits for "the strongest operating position we have seen in years"5.
The Consumer segment carried most of it: segment EBITDA margin was 45.0% against 42.1%6, on revenue that fell 1.5% to $26,242 million78. Business segment EBITDA margin rose to 29.1% from 24.7%9.
A higher margin on lower revenue is what a harvest looks like. It is also what a company looks like before it discovers it has cut too far.
For the full year 2025, adjusted EBITDA margin was about 36.2%, the same as in 20241011. The three-point jump came in a single year, after the headcount cut and the subsidy cut. Consolidated net income margin in the June 2026 quarter was 11.5% against 14.8%12, moving the other way.
The margin has to hold as the easy savings run out. A quarter below 38% in 2027 would make the record a moment in the cost cycle rather than a new level.
Adjusted EBITDA margin 40.1% in Q2 2026 from 37.1%.
The cost programme in one figure; below 38% in 2027 would mean the record was a moment, not a level.
