Animal HealthNarrow moat
Merck & Co. (MRK) — moat facet
Animal Health sells $6.4 billion a year at a 33.5% segment margin, a steady tenth of Merck that its Bravecto patent will test in 2027.
Animal Health is Merck's second reportable segment and its steadiest line. It sold $6,354 million in 20251, about 9.8% of Merck's sales2, and $1,775 million in the second quarter of 2026, up 8%3.
What is inside is veterinary pharmaceutical and vaccine products, plus health management solutions including digitally connected identification, traceability and monitoring products4. Livestock products sold $3,896 million and companion animal products $2,458 million in 20255. The largest single franchise is Bravecto, a flea and tick treatment, at $1.1 billion, 18% of the segment6.
The history is flat, then growing. Segment sales were $5,568 million in 2021, $5,550 million in 2022, $5,625 million in 2023, $5,877 million in 2024 and $6,354 million in 202578. Merck bought Elanco's aqua business in July 2024 for $1,303 million in cash9 and completed the acquisition of TARGAN, a poultry biodevice company, in 202610. The segment has been led by the same executive since September 201111.
How it is paid: veterinarians, farmers, distributors and pet owners, with less government price-setting than in human medicine.
Profitability is disclosed. Segment profit was $2,131 million in 2025, about 33.5% of sales1213, and $636 million in the second quarter of 202614. Unlike Pharma, the segment's profit is after its own research, $448 million in 2025, and all its cost of sales15.
Growth has been about 3.4% a year from 2021 to 202516, with 2025's 8.1%17 helped by acquisition. The segment's rival Zoetis grew about 2.3% in 202518.
The segment's cost lines show a business that pays its own way. In 2025 it bore $2,649 million of cost of sales, $1,125 million of selling, general and administrative expense and $448 million of research19. Its rival Zoetis reported revenue of $9,467 million and net income attributable of $2,673 million20, so Merck is the second-scale player in a business where scale in vaccine manufacturing and distribution to veterinarians matters.
The segment has had one leader for fifteen years. Richard DeLuca has run Merck Animal Health since September 201121, through the flat years and the recent acquisitions. That continuity is part of why the segment's margin has stayed in a narrow band while the human business swung with its deals.
The outlook is steady with one date: Bravecto's American patent ends in 202722. The segment's quarterly sales, $1,775 million in the second quarter of 202623, are the number to follow; growth that holds above 5% through 2028 despite Bravecto would mean the segment's other products carry it.
Sales +8% in Q2 2026, helped by acquisitions; Bravecto US patent 2027.
The segment's growth through Bravecto's 2027 patent date; above 5% through 2028 means the other products carry it.
