Companion Animals: Growing SlowlyNarrow moat
Merck & Co. (MRK) — moat facet
Merck's pet business grew only about 8% in four years and half of it is one flea-and-tick product.
Merck's pet business is smaller and slower than its reputation. Companion animal sales were $2,273 million in 2021, $2,250 million in 2022, $2,288 million in 2023, $2,415 million in 2024 and $2,458 million in 202512, about 8.1% in four years3.
Within it, Bravecto is the franchise, $1.1 billion of the segment in 20254. The rest of the pet line, vaccines and other medicines, is therefore roughly $1.36 billion5 and growing slowly.
The pet market is attractive in principle. Owners pay out of pocket, and veterinarians recommend products they trust, so prices hold better than in human medicine. But growth depends on new products, and the companion line has not had a large launch recently in its sales figures.
This is where a larger rival matters most. Zoetis, discussed on the Competitors page, reported revenue of $9,467 million in 20256, much of it from companion animals.
The contrast with livestock is recent. Companion sales grew about 1.8% in 2025 while livestock grew about 12.5%7; in 2021 the two lines were $2,273 million and $3,295 million8, so the gap between them has widened from about $1.0 billion to about $1.4 billion9.
The companion business is a narrow franchise leaning on one product line. Its sales growth, about 1.8% in 202510, is the figure to watch; if it turns negative after Bravecto's 2027 patent date, Merck's pet business will be shrinking just as it needs every source of growth.
Companion sales +1.8% in 2025.
The pet business; negative growth after Bravecto's 2027 date would mean it is shrinking.
