Merck & Co. (MRK) — threat to the moat

Merck is adding tags, monitors and poultry biodevices to Animal Health, and nobody outside the company knows what they earn.

Merck's Animal Health segment is broadening beyond medicines. It sells digitally connected identification, traceability and monitoring products1, and in 2026 it completed the acquisition of TARGAN, a poultry biodevice maker2.

The segment pays its own way.

These businesses tie Merck to the farm, but the filings do not show their margins. What they show is a segment whose margin fell from about 35.4% in 2022 to about 30.9% in 2023 before recovering to 33.5% in 20253.

The segment already carries its own research, $448 million in 20254, and its own selling costs, $1,125 million5. Hardware and data products usually need more selling and service effort per dollar of revenue than a vaccine does.

Merck's filing describes the newer products plainly: digitally connected identification, traceability and monitoring products6. They extend the segment's reach into farm data, and they are sold into the same agribusiness cycle as the medicines.

If the margin slips below 30% while acquired technology businesses grow, the segment is buying revenue at lower returns; the segment margin in the annual report will show it.
