⚠ Farms Get Sick, and Prices SwingLow threat
Merck & Co. (MRK) — threat to the moat
Merck's livestock business is exposed to epidemics, weather and farm prices, and has so far held within a narrow band.
Livestock medicine sells into an industry Merck does not control. The company lists the specific risks itself: epidemics and pandemics affecting livestock, government procurement and pricing practices, weather and global agribusiness economic events1.
Each can move demand quickly. A disease outbreak can destroy a herd that would have been vaccinated; a collapse in farm prices can cut spending on preventive care. Livestock products are 61.3% of the segment2, so the swings reach most of Animal Health.
The segment has absorbed them so far. Livestock sales moved within a narrow band from $3,295 million in 2021 to $3,337 million in 202334 before the 2025 rise.
Government buyers appear here too. Merck's list of animal health risks includes government procurement and pricing practices5, alongside disease and weather. In livestock vaccination, as in children's vaccines, the state is often both a buyer and a rule-maker.
A year in which livestock sales fall while the segment is not selling fewer products for its own reasons would show the agricultural cycle has turned; the annual livestock figure will show it before anything else.
