⚠ Half the Pet Line Is One ProductModerate threat

Merck & Co. (MRK) — threat to the moat

Without Bravecto, Merck's companion animal business is about $1.4 billion and barely growing.

Take Bravecto out and Merck's companion animal business is about $1.36 billion1. Bravecto was $1.1 billion of the $2,458 million companion line in 20252.

Companion Animal sales, 2025 ($M)Bravecto family 1,100 — 45%Other companion products 1,358 — 55%Merck Form 10-K FY2025; other calculated as companion sales less Bravecto
One product is close to half.

That matters because Bravecto's American patent ends in 20273. If its sales fall, the rest of the pet line is not growing fast enough to replace them; companion sales as a whole grew about 1.8% in 20254.

Merck is investing more in livestock than in pets, as its acquisitions of Elanco's aqua business5 and TARGAN6 show. That leaves the pet line dependent on internal research, which cost the whole Animal Health segment $448 million in 20257.

Bravecto itself is still healthy. It sold $359 million in the second quarter of 2026, up from $335 million8. The concern is not the product's present but the thinness of what stands behind it when its American protection ends.

The measure of this threat is companion animal sales in 2028, the first full year after Bravecto's American exclusivity. Sales below the 2025 level would mean the pet business has no second product ready.
