⚠ A Keytruda Biosimilar Is Already on SaleLow threat
Merck & Co. (MRK) — threat to the moat
A biosimilar of Keytruda is already sold in Argentina, a small preview of what the patent calendar promises everywhere else.
The first copy of Keytruda is not a forecast. Merck's own annual report states that a biosimilar of Keytruda has launched in Argentina1. It is a small market, but it shows that the molecule can be copied and sold today wherever local patent protection allows it.
The same report adds a second warning from Europe: the launch and reimbursement of new Keytruda indications in the European Union in 2025 had a negative impact on pricing there2. Each new label brings more patients and, in markets with health-technology assessment, a lower average price.
Merck's general experience is stated plainly. As its products lose market exclusivity, it "generally experiences a significant and rapid loss of sales"3. International Keytruda sales were $12,812 million in 20254, the portion most exposed to price erosion before the American patent ends.
Europe may be next. Merck warns of possible attempts to launch a biosimilar in some European jurisdictions following the expiry of data exclusivity there in July 20265, even though the compound patent runs to 20316. A company expects challenges where the protection is thinnest, and Merck's filing names the place.
The test of this threat is the gap between international and American growth. International Keytruda grew about 10.4% in 2025 against about 5.4% in the United States7; if that gap closes or reverses before 2028, European pricing and local copies are already eating into the franchise.
