Animal Health: A Steadier Third LegNarrow moat

Merck & Co. (MRK) — moat facet

Animal Health is Merck's steadiest business at about a tenth of sales, which is why it cannot replace Keytruda.

Merck's Animal Health segment is the most stable part of the company and the least able to save it. It sold $6,354 million in 2025, about 9.8% of Merck's sales, and earned segment profit of $2,131 million12. It makes veterinary medicines and vaccines, plus identification, traceability and monitoring products3, and it has been run by the same executive since September 20114.

Flat for three years, then growth.

Its moat is ordinary but real: manufacturing scale in animal vaccines, relationships with veterinarians and large farms, and a brand in parasite control through Bravecto, which sold $1.1 billion in 20255. Livestock is $3,896 million and companion animals $2,458 million6.

Growth has been modest and partly bought. Segment sales were $5,568 million in 2021 and $5,877 million in 202478; the 2025 rise of about 8.1%9 followed the purchase of Elanco's aqua business10. In the second quarter of 2026 sales were $1,775 million against $1,646 million11, about 7.8% more12.

The larger rival is Zoetis, with $9,467 million of revenue13, discussed on the Competitors page. Merck is a strong second, not the leader.

The segment's second-quarter growth was broad. Animal Health grew 8% to $1,775 million in the second quarter of 2026, which Merck attributes to both its livestock and companion animal portfolios14. Segment profit rose to $636 million from $593 million on the recast basis15.

The segment is worth having for its steadiness and its separate risks. Its quarterly sales, $1,775 million in the second quarter of 202616, are the number to hold it to; a return to the near-flat years of 2021 to 2023 would mean acquisitions, not the franchise, are doing the growing.

Moat trajectory: Holding steady

Sales up about 8% in 2025 and 7.8% in Q2 2026, helped by acquisitions.
