Bravecto: 18% of Animal HealthNarrow moat

Merck & Co. (MRK) — moat facet

Bravecto is 18% of Merck's Animal Health sales and its American patent ends in 2027, a year before Keytruda's.

Animal Health has its own concentration. Sales of the Bravecto family of products were $1.1 billion in 2025, 18% of the segment's sales1. Bravecto treats fleas and ticks in dogs and cats, and Merck warns that any negative event with respect to it could have a material adverse effect on Animal Health sales2.

Bravecto quarterly sales ($M)335Q2 2025359Q2 2026Merck Q2 2026 results release
Still growing before its 2027 date.

It is still growing. Bravecto sold $359 million in the second quarter of 2026, up from $335 million a year earlier3, about 7% more4. That growth comes from pet owners who pay for a longer-lasting treatment, a market with less reimbursement pressure than human medicine.

The product sits in the companion animal line, which sold $2,458 million in 20255. Bravecto is therefore close to half of Merck's companion animal business6.

The patent calendar reaches this segment too. The patent table lists Bravecto's American protection to 20277, a year before Keytruda's.

Merck treats Bravecto as a key product for the whole company, not only for the segment. Its risk factors list Bravecto alongside Keytruda, Gardasil, Lynparza and Winrevair as products on whose continued profitability its profits and cash flows depend largely8.

Bravecto is a real franchise with a short remaining life in the United States. Its quarterly sales, $359 million in the second quarter of 20269, are the number to watch after 2027; a fall of more than a fifth in the year after exclusivity ends would mean the pet-owner market behaves like the human one.

Moat trajectory: Holding steady

Growing 7% in Q2 2026; US patent to 2027.

Bravecto sales, latest quarter
$359M, about +7% (Q2 2026)

The segment's largest product; a steep fall after 2027 would show pet medicines lose exclusivity like human ones.
