⚠ 2029: The Year the Patents Run OutHigh threat

Johnson & Johnson (JNJ) — threat to the moat

J&J's biggest product loses its core United States patents in 2029, and Stelara showed what that year looks like.

The protection behind J&J's largest product has a published end. The two Genmab patent families related to Darzalex both expire in the United States in 2029, and in Europe compound and use protection extends to 2031 or 2032 in select countries1. J&J's Janssen Biotech owns a separate patent portfolio covering the Faspro formulation2, and how much of the franchise that second layer can hold is the open question.

A dated cliff on the largest product.

The company's own risk factors describe what usually follows: the impact of patent expirations, typically followed by the introduction of competing generic, biosimilar or other products and resulting revenue and market share losses3. Stelara is the local precedent. It fell 41.3% in its first full year of biosimilar competition4.

A Darzalex decline of that shape on $14.4 billion of sales would remove more revenue than J&J's entire Neuroscience business earned in 2025, $7,837 million5. That comparison is the size of the problem the pipeline has to fill.

The timing is awkward for the replacement machine. Stelara's decline will largely be over by 2029, but Simponi and Opsumit expect copies earlier6, and the new myeloma medicines, Carvykti, Tecvayli and Talvey, sold a combined $1,091 million in the second quarter of 202678, about a quarter of Darzalex's $4,207 million9. They are growing fast, but they would have to be several times larger by 2029 to replace a Darzalex decline of Stelara's shape.

The European dates give some cushion. Compound and use protection in select European countries extends to 2031 or 203210, and international Darzalex sales were $1,772 million in the second quarter of 202611, about 42% of the total12. A United States cliff in 2029 would still leave the European half protected for a few more years.

The falsifier is simple to state: the share of Darzalex sales that has moved to the Faspro formulation before 2029. If most of the franchise sits on J&J's own patents by then, the cliff is lower than the headline date suggests; if it does not, 2029 looks like Stelara again.
