Sixty-Four Dividend Increases in a RowWide moat
Johnson & Johnson (JNJ) — moat facet
J&J has raised its dividend 64 years in a row and pays it from about 63% of free cash flow.
On 14 April 2026 J&J raised its quarterly dividend from $1.30 to $1.34 per share, marking the 64th year of consecutive increases1. Dividends paid per share rose from $2.95 in 20152 to $5.14 in 20253, about 74% in ten years4.
The record is a moat of a kind. It disciplines management: every capital allocation decision is made knowing the dividend must rise next April. The company lists annually increasing competitive dividends among its standing capital allocation priorities, alongside research, acquisitions and share repurchases5. And it attracts a shareholder base that holds through bad news, which gives management room to take long-term decisions.
The dividend is well covered. Payments of $12,381 million in 2025 were about 46% of GAAP net earnings and 47% of adjusted net earnings of $26,215 million678. Against free cash flow of about $19.7 billion9 the dividend takes about 63%10.
At the current rate of $1.34 a quarter the annual dividend is $5.36 and the yield about 1.98% on the September 2026 price11. That yield is low by J&J's own history because the share price has risen 53.30% in a year12.
The dividend has grown more slowly than the business recently. Between 2023 and 2025 dividends paid per share rose from $4.70 to $5.14, about 9%1314, while adjusted EPS rose from $9.98 in 2024 to $10.79 in 202515. The board is choosing a steady, modest rise rather than matching earnings, which leaves room for the acquisitions that the replacement machine needs.
The record survived years that would have tested it. In 2017 net earnings were $1,300 million after a tax charge of $16,373 million on the new tax law16, and dividends per share still rose from $3.15 to $3.3217. The board paid from cash flow, not from reported earnings, and the record held.
The dividend record is the most dependable promise J&J makes. The payout of free cash flow is the check: above 75% for two years would mean the dividend is starting to compete with the research and acquisitions that keep the franchises alive.
The 2026 increase was 3.1%; coverage remains comfortable.
Coverage of the 64-year dividend record; above 75% for two years would mean it competes with research and deals.
