⚠ Abiomed Shrank in the Second QuarterModerate threat

Johnson & Johnson (JNJ) — threat to the moat

The heart-pump business J&J bought for growth shrank 4.8% in the United States in the latest quarter.

After three years of double-digit growth, Abiomed went backwards. Second-quarter 2026 sales were $440 million against $448 million a year earlier, down 2.0%, and in the United States $342 million against $360 million, down 4.8%1. International sales rose 9.5% to $97 million2.

The home market fell, the rest grew.

One quarter proves little. But Abiomed is a business bought for its growth, and the United States is where most of it is sold. A slowdown there bears directly on the $17.1 billion paid3.

It also bears on the contingent value right. The milestone needs more than $3.7 billion of sales in the window from the second quarter of 20274, and a declining quarter makes it more remote still.

The first quarter had looked fine: J&J named Abiomed among the drivers of MedTech growth in the first quarter of 20265. A quarter of growth followed by a quarter of decline is the pattern of a business whose orders are lumpy, or one whose market has changed. Two more quarters will say which.

The contingent value right gives the quarter a sharper edge. Its first milestone needs Abiomed to exceed $3.7 billion of net sales in a twelve-month window starting in the second quarter of fiscal 20276, and the business sold $440 million in the latest quarter7, an annual pace of about $1.8 billion8.

Abiomed's United States growth in the next two quarters settles it. A return above 10% would mark the second quarter as a pause; a second decline would mean the heart-pump market or Abiomed's share of it has changed.
