Johnson & Johnson (JNJ) — the future bets

J&J's $55 billion United States investment is as much a tariff shield as a growth plan.

In March 2025 J&J said it would invest more than $55 billion in its United States pharmaceutical and medtech operations over the next four years, a 25% increase over its previous investment cycle1. It broke ground the same day on a $2 billion, 500,000 square foot biologics manufacturing facility in Wilson, North Carolina2. In January 2026 it announced two further facilities, in North Carolina and Pennsylvania3, and in the second quarter it announced more than $1 billion to strengthen vision manufacturing in Jacksonville, Florida4.

A four-year promise against about $5 billion a year of capex.

The investment is partly defence. J&J's January 2026 agreement with the administration gave its pharmaceutical products an exemption from tariffs, and the company tied the announcement to delivering on its $55 billion investment5. Factories in the United States are a condition of staying on good terms with the government that pays for so many of its medicines.

The capital spending is visible but not dramatic. Additions to property, plant and equipment were $4,543 million in 2023, $4,424 million in 2024 and $4,832 million in 20256. The $55 billion includes research and technology spending as well as plants7, so it will not all appear as capital expenditure.

There is also a cost-cutting side. In the second quarter of 2026 J&J began a supply chain restructuring to exit certain manufacturing locations, primarily in Innovative Medicine, with estimated costs of $650 to $750 million through 20298. The company is building in the United States and closing elsewhere.

J&J has said the investment supports a goal of manufacturing the vast majority of its advanced medicines in the United States, with the $55 billion to be deployed by early 20299. It also secured a 160,000+ square foot biopharmaceutical site in Holly Springs, North Carolina, with a $2 billion commitment over ten years10. The next-generation cell therapy site announced for Pennsylvania11 ties this bet directly to Carvykti and to Sail.

This is a bet on supply security and political standing rather than on growth. Capital expenditure is the evidence: rising well above $5 billion a year would show the new plants being built, and continued tariff exemption would show the spending buying what it was meant to.
