⚠ An Eight-Year AssetModerate threat
Johnson & Johnson (JNJ) — threat to the moat
J&J's own books give Caplyta eight years to earn back a $14.5 billion price.
J&J's own accounting puts a clock on the Caplyta purchase. The amortizable intangible asset relates to the currently marketed product, Caplyta, which has an estimated useful life of 8 years1. That is the company's estimate of how long the product earns its value, and it is not long for a $14.5 billion price2.
Eight years from April 2025 is 2033. Within that window Caplyta has to grow from $700 million of nine-month sales3 into a franchise large enough to pay back the purchase and the $9.2 billion of notes issued to fund it4.
The risk is the familiar one in psychiatry: newer treatments and eventual copies. The Invega family shows how quickly a mature neuroscience product can lose ground, down 9.8% in 20255.
The acquired research assets add optionality. The in-process research acquired with Intra-Cellular includes one asset in unapproved indications of lumateperone and another for psychosis and agitation in patients with Alzheimer's disease and generalized anxiety disorder6. If either succeeds, the useful life of the franchise extends beyond the eight years assigned to the currently marketed product.
The funding adds a second clock. J&J issued senior unsecured notes for approximately $9.2 billion in the first quarter of 2025, the net proceeds used to fund the Intra-Cellular acquisition and for general corporate purposes7, and interest expense rose to $971 million from $755 million8. The notes will outlive the eight-year intangible unless Caplyta's label keeps widening.
Keep a running total of Caplyta sales against the $14.5 billion paid. Reaching half of that by 2029 would put the purchase on course to earn back its price within the eight years J&J itself allows.
