Servers and NetworkingNarrow moat
Dell Technologies (DELL) — moat facet
Servers and networking went from a flat $18 billion line to $44 billion in two years, and the AI half now decides Dell's results.
Servers and networking became Dell's largest revenue line in fiscal 2026, with $44,195 million, about 39% of company revenue12. It is the line that turned Dell from a PC company with a data-centre arm into an AI infrastructure supplier.
What is inside has changed. Since its fiscal 2026 annual report Dell splits the line in two: AI-optimized servers, $24,683 million, and traditional servers and networking, $19,512 million3. The first is accelerated computing systems, sold in racks and clusters to cloud providers, governments and enterprises building AI capacity. The second is the general-purpose servers and networking gear that run ordinary corporate computing.
The history is long and was flat for years. Servers and networking sold $12,368 million in fiscal 2015 and $12,834 million in fiscal 20174, $17,901 million in fiscal 2022, $20,398 million in fiscal 2023 and $17,624 million in fiscal 2024, a 14% fall5. The line then grew 54% in fiscal 2025 and 63% in fiscal 20266, almost all of it from AI: AI-optimized servers went from $1,873 million to $24,683 million in two years7.
How it is paid: mostly as hardware sold and recognised on delivery, often financed by Dell Financial Services, with support contracts attached and recognised over time as services revenue. Traditional server growth in fiscal 2026 came "primarily due to an increase in the average selling price" while units fell8; AI growth came from units9.
Profitability is not disclosed for the line alone. Dell reports operating income for the whole infrastructure segment, 11.7% of revenue in fiscal 202610, and says the rate fell because of the shift toward AI servers11. The implication is that AI servers earn a lower margin than storage and conventional servers, though Dell does not quantify it.
Growth has accelerated further. In the second quarter of fiscal 2027 the line sold $26,932 million, AI $16,401 million and traditional $10,531 million1213, about 57% of company revenue14. Dell's guidance calls for $74.0 billion of AI servers in fiscal 202715.
The outlook depends on the AI order book, $95 billion at the end of July16, and on whether traditional servers keep growing once memory prices ease. The verdict turns on one number: the line's quarterly revenue. If it keeps rising through the second half toward the $74 billion AI target, Dell has become an infrastructure company; if the AI part flattens near $16 billion a quarter and the traditional part falls back, fiscal 2027 will look like the peak of a cycle.
Q2 FY2027 $26.9bn, 57% of revenue.
The largest line; a flat AI half near $16bn a quarter would mark the peak.
