A PC Margin Down Two Points in Two YearsThin moat
Dell Technologies (DELL) — moat facet
Dell's PC segment has lost two points of margin in two years and a third of its operating income since fiscal 2022.
The profitability of Dell's PC business has been sliding. The client segment's operating margin was about 7.6% in fiscal 2024, 6.1% in fiscal 2025 and 5.6% in fiscal 20261. Operating income fell from $3,712 million to $2,833 million over those two years2, and from $4,365 million in fiscal 20223, a decline of about 35% in four years4.
The fiscal 2024 figure itself comes with a footnote. Dell revised it after finding supplier credits that had not been recorded or had been recorded in the wrong period; the correction raised that year's operating income by $200 million5. On the figures as first reported, the segment earned $3,512 million in fiscal 20246.
Why the margin falls is not mysterious. Consumer revenue, where pricing is hardest, keeps shrinking, but commercial buyers also push hard on price, and component costs have risen. Dell has chosen to protect volume with its large business customers rather than hold margin.
There was a bounce in fiscal 2027. The segment earned $1,170 million in the first quarter and $1,142 million in the second, against $653 million and $803 million a year earlier78, margins of about 8.0% and 7.6%9.
The first half of fiscal 2027 put the segment back near its pandemic-era margins. CSG earned $2,312 million on $29,643 million of revenue10, about 7.8%11. If that holds for the year it would be the best client margin since fiscal 2024.
The PC franchise still produces cash, but less each year until this spring. The annual operating margin will judge it: fiscal 2027 finishing above 7% would mean the bounce was real; finishing near 5.6% again would mean it was a quarter of favourable pricing.
CSG margin 7.6% to 5.6% over FY2024-FY2026; bounce in H1 FY2027.
The PC franchise's profit; a full year back above $3.5bn would mean the recent bounce is durable.
