⚠ When Memory Prices Fall BackModerate threat
Dell Technologies (DELL) — threat to the moat
Dell's PC prices rose with memory costs, and they will fall with them, possibly while Dell still holds expensive stock.
Pricing that follows component costs up will follow them down. Dell's client revenue rose about 20% in the second quarter of fiscal 2027 on fewer units12, largely because memory became more expensive3.
When a component shortage ends, prices fall across the industry. Dell would then face lower selling prices while holding inventory bought at high prices: inventories stood at $21,290 million at 31 July 20264, much of it for infrastructure but some for PCs.
The client segment's margin is thin enough that a mistimed inventory position can erase a quarter's profit. It earned 4.7% in the fourth quarter of fiscal 20265, before the current price rises.
The commitments reach beyond this year. Dell's purchase obligations include $4.9 billion for fiscal 2028 and $6.1 billion for fiscal 20296, contracted in a period of rising component prices. If prices fall, those obligations could become a cost disadvantage against rivals who buy later.
The warning would come in the gross margin rate. If Dell's gross margin falls below 20% while client revenue declines, the pass-through has reversed and the segment is absorbing the cost.
