Dell Technologies (DELL) — moat facet

IDC ranks Dell first in servers at 16.5%, more than twice Supermicro, but the lead was built in a single extraordinary quarter.

Dell's claim to scale in servers has independent support. In the first calendar quarter of 2026 IDC ranked Dell first among server vendors with a 16.5% share of revenue, after 244.1% growth1. Supermicro followed with 7.6%, Lenovo with 4.6% and HPE with 3.0%2.

More than double the next branded vendor.

For calendar 2025 as a whole, IDC's review put Dell first among the brand-name makers with about 10% of sales against Supermicro's 9.5%3. The market itself set a record of $444.1 billion, up 80.4%4. So Dell's lead over its nearest branded rival widened from about half a point across 2025 to about nine points in the first quarter of 20265.

The important context is who Dell does not beat. IDC counts servers built by contract manufacturers directly for the largest cloud companies as ODM direct, and that category held 50.2% of revenue in the first quarter of 2026, down from 64.1% a year earlier6. Dell's gain came partly from that shift: more AI capacity was bought by customers who want a vendor to build, deliver and support it.

Market share in servers is a real moat input because it feeds purchasing. A company that buys the most processors, memory and drives gets allocation when parts are short, which is exactly the condition of 2026. Dell's filing describes a supply chain that "operates at a significant scale"7.

The server market's other brand names are far behind. In IDC's 2025 review IEIT had 4.1%, Lenovo 4.0% and HPE 3.1%8. Dell's closest branded rival was Supermicro; the next three together held 11.2%9, not much more than Supermicro alone.

The share is also young. Dell reached it in a quarter when its AI server revenue grew 757%10. The next IDC figures will say whether 16.5% is a position or a peak; a return toward 10% while ODM direct share recovers would mean the lead belonged to one buying season.

Moat trajectory: Widening
