Buybacks Deeper Than the EquityNarrow moat
Dell Technologies (DELL) — moat facet
Dell has bought back so much stock that its shareholders' equity is negative, and it is still buying at twice the price of six months ago.
Dell returns cash aggressively, mostly through buybacks. It repurchased $2,080 million of stock in fiscal 2024, $2,588 million in fiscal 2025 and $6,014 million in fiscal 20261. In fiscal 2026 it returned a record $7.5 billion to shareholders and repurchased roughly 54 million shares2, and it returned a record $4.3 billion in the second quarter of fiscal 2027 alone3.
The buybacks have taken Dell's shareholders' equity below zero. Treasury stock was $8,502 million at the end of fiscal 2025, $14,533 million at the end of fiscal 2026 and $20,010 million at 31 July 202645, and total shareholders' equity was a deficit of $1,427 million6. Return on equity is not meaningful on a negative base7.
Negative equity is not a sign of distress here. It is the accounting result of a company that has paid out more than its accumulated book earnings, much of which were reduced by years of EMC amortisation. Dell's cash flow and falling core debt support the payouts.
The price paid matters, though. In the first half of fiscal 2027 Dell bought about 20 million shares for about $5.4 billion8, an average of about $270 a share9; the stock closed at $562.89 on 25 September 202610. Authorisation of about $15.2 billion remains11.
The pace has accelerated sharply. Over fiscal 2024 to fiscal 2026 Dell repurchased $10,682 million of stock12, more than half of it in the last of those years, and it bought another $3,796 million in the second quarter of fiscal 2027 alone13.
Buybacks are how Dell converts its cash flow into per-share value. The quarterly repurchase figure is the thing to track, $3,796 million in the second quarter of fiscal 202714; buying at a faster pace after a fourfold rise in the share price would spend more of the owners' money for less of the company.
Record $4.3bn returned in Q2 FY2027; $15.2bn authorisation left.
How much cash goes back through buybacks; a faster pace at today's price buys less of the company per dollar.
