The $95 Billion BacklogNarrow moat

Dell Technologies (DELL) — moat facet

Dell's AI backlog went from about $9 billion to $95 billion in eighteen months, more than its whole revenue two years ago.

Dell's AI order book tells a story of demand outrunning supply. At the end of fiscal 2025 the company put its AI server backlog at roughly $9 billion1. A year later it was $43 billion2, and at the end of the second quarter of fiscal 2027 it was $95 billion3.

AI server backlog as stated by Dell ($bn)~9Feb 202514.4Q1 FY2618.4Q3 FY2643FY26 end95Q2 FY27Dell results releases, Q4 FY2025 to Q2 FY2027
From $9 billion to $95 billion.

The orders arrived in waves. Dell booked $3.6 billion of AI server orders in the third quarter of fiscal 20254, $12.1 billion in the first quarter of fiscal 20265, $12.3 billion in the third6, more than $64 billion across fiscal 20267, $24.4 billion in the first quarter of fiscal 20278 and a record $60.9 billion in the second9. In that last quarter orders were about 3.7 times the $16.4 billion of AI revenue Dell recognised10.

A backlog of this size is both evidence and exposure. It is evidence that customers chose Dell for very large projects and committed before delivery. It is exposure because a backlog is a promise that still has to be built, shipped and paid for, at prices set months earlier, while the costs of memory and components move.

The customers behind the orders are not disclosed individually; the Major Clients pages deal with that separately. What the backlog does show is scale. The $95 billion is almost exactly Dell's entire revenue in fiscal 2025, $95,567 million11.

The chief financial officer's summary of the quarter was that Dell used its strengths "to drive growth, share gains, profitability and cash generation"12. The backlog is the part of that sentence that can be checked: orders of $60.9 billion exceeded recognised AI revenue of $16.4 billion13, adding about $44.5 billion to the order book in a single quarter14.

The backlog is the strongest single piece of evidence for Dell's position in AI infrastructure. Its direction is the thing to track: a backlog that starts shrinking while quarterly AI revenue stays near $16 billion would mean new orders have slowed to the pace of shipments, the first sign the wave is cresting.

Moat trajectory: Widening

Backlog $43bn at FY2026 end, $95bn at Q2 FY2027.

$95bn (Q2 FY2027)

Committed demand not yet shipped; a falling backlog with flat shipments would mark the crest.
