Super Micro and HPE: Head-On in AI ServersNarrow moat
Dell Technologies (DELL) — moat facet
Dell went from a near tie with Supermicro in 2025 to more than twice its server share in early 2026.
In the market for branded servers Dell has opened a clear lead over its direct rivals. In IDC's review of 2025, Dell and Supermicro were close, about 10% of sales against 9.5%1, with HPE at 3.1%2. In the first quarter of 2026 Dell had 16.5% and Supermicro 7.6%, with Lenovo at 4.6% and HPE at 3.0%3.
These rivals sell what Dell sells: servers built around the same families of processors and accelerators, delivered and supported for data-centre customers. The contest is decided by delivery dates, supply allocation, financing and service, the things Dell's scale is built to provide.
The market values tell the same story. Super Micro Computer was worth $27.24 billion on 25 September 20264, against Dell's $357.89 billion5. Dell's AI server revenue in fiscal 2026 alone, $24,683 million6, is close to Supermicro's entire market value.
Head-on competition in hardware still limits prices. Dell's infrastructure margin was 11.7% in fiscal 20267, and every large AI deal is bid against at least one of these rivals.
The branded field beyond them is thin. In IDC's 2025 review IEIT had 4.1% and Lenovo 4.0% of server revenue8. None of the other brand-name makers is within reach of Dell's current share.
Against its branded peers Dell is winning. The combined share of Supermicro and HPE, 10.6% of server revenue in the first quarter of 20269, is the number to follow; if it climbs back toward Dell's share, the 2026 lead was a function of who had supply in one season.
Dell 16.5% against Supermicro 7.6% and HPE 3.0%.
The branded rivals' position; a climb back toward Dell's share would mean the lead was one season.
