Major ClientsNarrow moat
Dell Technologies (DELL) — moat facet
Dell had no customer above 10% of revenue until fiscal 2026, when one AI buyer reached 12%, and it says nothing about who holds the backlog.
Dell's customer base was broad until the AI boom and is concentrating now. For fiscal 2025 and fiscal 2024 no single customer accounted for 10% or more of revenue; in fiscal 2026 one customer accounted for 12%, "with substantially all of such net revenue attributable to the sale of ISG offerings"1. Dell does not name it.
Revenue concentration and backlog concentration have to be read separately, and only the first is disclosed. Dell reports an AI server backlog of $95 billion2 and remaining performance obligations of about $132 billion3, but gives no split of either by customer. What it does say is qualitative: the majority of AI server revenue "has involved purchases by a relatively small number of large customers and cloud service providers"4.
Outside AI the picture is diversified. Dell sells to companies of every size, governments and consumers, about 40% of it through channel partners5, and no foreign country accounted for 10% of revenue in fiscal 20266. The United States provided about 56%7.
So there are two customer bases. The traditional one is wide, repeat-buying and supported by service contracts. The AI one is narrow, very large per deal and still forming.
Dell manages the credit side of concentration as well as the sales side. Its quarterly filing says it performs "periodic evaluations of our positions with counterparties and may limit exposure to any one counterparty in accordance with our policies"8. A lender limiting exposure to a large buyer is a reminder that in AI infrastructure, winning a large customer also means extending it a large amount of credit.
Dell's revenue concentration is moderate today and probably rising, since the 12% customer came entirely from the fastest-growing segment. Watch the single-customer share in the next annual report: a disclosure above 15% for fiscal 2027, or a second customer above 10%, would mean the AI business depends on a few buyers the way Dell's PC business never did.
First 10%-plus customer in FY2026; AI buyers few and large.
Concentration from the AI business; above 15%, or a second 10% customer, would mean dependence on a few buyers.
