The PC FranchiseThin moat
Dell Technologies (DELL) — moat facet
Dell's PC business still brings in nearly half its revenue, but it earns a 5.6% margin that has fallen for two years.
Dell was built on PCs, and the business still brings in nearly half its revenue. The client segment, CSG, sold $50,984 million in fiscal 2026: $44,062 million of commercial PCs and $6,922 million of consumer ones1. It earned $2,833 million of operating income, a margin of 5.6%2.
The two halves are going in opposite directions. Commercial revenue rose 8% in fiscal 2026 on more units and richer configurations3; consumer revenue fell 8% on lower prices and fewer units4, and is now less than half what it was in fiscal 20225. IDC ranked Dell third in worldwide PC shipments in the second calendar quarter of 2026, with 13.6%, behind Lenovo and HP6.
The moat here is modest. Business customers buy fleets on contracts with support attached, and Dell's direct sales force and partners serve them well. That produces renewals, not pricing power. The segment's margin has fallen from about 7.6% in fiscal 2024 to 5.6% in fiscal 20267, and its operating income is about 35% below fiscal 20228.
The first half of fiscal 2027 looked better: CSG earned $2,312 million on $29,643 million of revenue9, helped by higher prices as memory costs rose. Whether that is a turn or a passing effect of the component cycle is the open question.
The margin decline looks less dramatic against a longer history. The client segment earned 5.2% of revenue in fiscal 2015, 3.9% in fiscal 2016 and 5.0% in fiscal 201710. Measured against those years, fiscal 2026's 5.6% is normal for Dell's PC business; the 7% years around the pandemic were the exception. The PC franchise has always been a thin-margin business, and it is returning to type.
The PC franchise is now a supporting business for Dell, producing about 19% of segment operating income in the second quarter of fiscal 202711. Its quarterly operating margin, about 7.6% in the latest quarter12, is the measure: a full year above 7% would restore it as a steady cash engine; a return to the mid-5% range would confirm a slow decline.
Margin 7.6% to 5.6% over two years; consumer halved since FY2022.
The PC franchise's profitability; a full year back in the mid-5% range would confirm a slow decline.
