Traditional Servers: Price Up, Units DownNarrow moat
Dell Technologies (DELL) — moat facet
Dell's conventional server revenue doubled in a quarter, but its own filing says the growth before that came from higher prices on fewer units.
Dell's conventional servers and networking were supposed to be the part of the business AI would leave behind. Instead the line grew: $15,751 million in fiscal 2024, $17,850 million in fiscal 2025 and $19,512 million in fiscal 2026, up 9%1.
How it grew matters. Dell says fiscal 2026 revenue rose "primarily due to an increase in the average selling price", partly offset by "a decline in units sold"2. Customers bought fewer conventional servers but paid more for each, with richer configurations and more expensive memory inside.
Then the line took off. In the second quarter of fiscal 2027 traditional servers and networking sold $10,531 million, up 122% from $4,736 million a year earlier3. In the first half of fiscal 2027 the line sold $19,074 million, close to its whole fiscal 2026 total4.
Some of that surge is price. Dell's quarterly filing points to "substantial inflation in memory component costs"5, and a server maker passes those costs on. Some is volume from companies refreshing ordinary data centres around new AI clusters. The filings do not split the two, and a reader should be careful about treating a price-led year as proof of a stronger franchise.
The pattern is not new. In fiscal 2017 Dell's servers and networking revenue was "relatively unchanged", with "an increase in average selling prices due to a shift to PowerEdge servers with richer configurations" offsetting fewer units6. For a decade the conventional server business has grown mainly by selling richer machines rather than more of them.
What this line shows about the moat is the installed base: a customer running Dell servers keeps buying Dell servers when prices rise, because changing suppliers means retraining staff and changing management tools. That is a switching cost, modest but real. The quarterly revenue figure is the test. If traditional server revenue falls back toward $5 billion a quarter once memory prices ease, the surge was inflation, not demand.
Q2 FY2027 +122% on price and refresh; units declined in FY2026.
The legacy server line; a fall back toward $5bn a quarter as memory prices ease would show the surge was price.
