⚠ The Float Reverses When Growth StopsModerate threat
Dell Technologies (DELL) — threat to the moat
Suppliers fund $49.7 billion of Dell's business now, and that money flows back out if growth stalls.
Supplier financing is generous when a company grows and harsh when it shrinks. When Dell's orders slow, it buys less, its payables fall and the cash that suppliers had been providing flows back out.
The pattern is visible in Dell's own history. Operating cash flow was $8,676 million in fiscal 2024, $4,521 million in fiscal 2025 and $11,185 million in fiscal 20261, swinging far more than net income.
The float today is much larger. Payables of $49,723 million2 are about $16 billion higher than six months earlier3. If the AI wave slows and purchases drop, a meaningful part of that could have to be paid down in a few quarters.
The company-defined measure shows the same swing. Adjusted free cash flow was $3,097 million in fiscal 2025 and $11,508 million in fiscal 20264, a change far larger than the change in earnings.
Operating cash flow against net income is where it would show first. In the second quarter of fiscal 2027 it was $2,225 million against $4,133 million5; a full year of cash flow well below earnings would mean the float has started to reverse.
