⚠ A Cash Engine Worth Less Each YearModerate threat
Dell Technologies (DELL) — threat to the moat
Dell's PC business earns a third less than in fiscal 2022, leaving the lumpier AI business to carry the dividend and buybacks.
The PC business used to fund Dell's other ambitions. Its contribution is shrinking. CSG operating income was $4,365 million in fiscal 20221 and $2,833 million in fiscal 20262, a fall of about 35%3. Its revenue fell from $61,464 million to $50,984 million over the same period45.
In fiscal 2024 CSG and ISG earned similar amounts, $3,712 million and $4,286 million6. By the second quarter of fiscal 2027 ISG earned $4,781 million in a single quarter against CSG's $1,142 million7.
A falling cash engine matters because Dell's capital returns, its debt service and its dividend were built on the PC business's steadiness. The AI business now carries them, and it is far lumpier.
The longer view is less bleak. CSG earned $2,051 million in fiscal 20158, so fiscal 2026's $2,833 million is still higher than a decade ago. The decline is from a pandemic peak, not from the business's normal level, and the first half of fiscal 2027 brought $2,312 million9.
Annual operating income tells the story. Fiscal 2027 below $2.8 billion would extend the decline to a fifth year; above $3.5 billion would mean the segment has found a floor.
