Dell Technologies (DELL) — threat to the moat
Dell bought back stock at about $270 a share early in 2026, and the same authorisation now buys half as much.
Dell's buybacks were cheap when its shares were cheap. They are not now. The company bought about 20 million shares for about $5.4 billion in the first half of fiscal 20271, roughly $270 each2. The shares closed at $562.89 on 25 September 2026, up 326% in a year34.
A company buying back stock is betting that the shares are worth more than the price. At about 31 times trailing earnings5, Dell's shares are priced for the AI business to keep growing.
The chief financial officer sold 23,896 shares at an average price of $585.02 after the quarter6. One sale proves little, but it is the opposite trade to the company's.
Insiders hold much of the company already. Stockanalysis reports that insiders own about 47.08% of the shares7, mostly through Michael Dell's Class A stock. Buybacks at high prices raise his percentage ownership without his buying a share.
What would show the risk is the next quarterly buyback figure. If Dell repurchases more than $4 billion in a quarter at prices above $500, it is committing heavily at a valuation that assumes the boom lasts.
