A Fifth of Revenue, Nearly Half the Gross ProfitNarrow moat

Dell Technologies (DELL) — moat facet

Services are a fifth of Dell's revenue but earn nearly half its gross profit, at more than three times the margin of the hardware.

Dell's services are the richest part of its business and the least noticed. In fiscal 2026 services revenue was $23,133 million against products of $90,405 million1. Services cost $12,774 million to deliver and products $78,057 million2. That leaves services with a gross margin of about 44.8% and products with about 13.7%3.

Services are nearly half the gross profit.

Put another way, services were about 20% of revenue and about 46% of gross profit4. The hardware Dell ships is the reason these contracts exist; the contracts are where much of the money is made.

What sits inside the line is ordinary but sticky. Dell's filing describes services as hardware and software support that extends beyond standard warranties, software maintenance, installation, professional services and training5. Maintenance is recognised over the period of the contract6, so a server sold today brings in support revenue for years.

The margin gap explains why Dell's overall gross margin rate falls when hardware booms. Gross margin was 23.8% of revenue in fiscal 2024 and 20.0% in fiscal 20267: product sales grew fast, services did not, and the blend moved toward the thinner business.

The services margin was higher before VMware left. On the basis reported in fiscal 2021, which included VMware, services revenue was $24,313 million and services gross margin 61.1%8. Much of the highest-margin recurring revenue in Dell's history belonged to VMware's software, and it went with the spin-off; what remains is hardware support at about 45%.

This is the part of Dell where a moat in the classic sense exists: a customer rarely changes the support provider for equipment already installed. If the share of gross profit that comes from services, about 46% in fiscal 20269, keeps falling as AI hardware grows, Dell becomes more of a pure assembler each year.

Moat trajectory: Narrowing

Services revenue fell 4% in FY2026 while products grew 27%.

The sticky, high-margin line; continued stagnation while hardware booms means the mix keeps thinning.
