⚠ Fewer People Behind the SupportLow threat
Dell Technologies (DELL) — threat to the moat
Dell cut about a fifth of its staff in two years while its installed base of complex systems grew, and support is a people business.
Dell has cut its workforce hard, and a support business is made of people. Employees fell from about 120,000 in February 2024 to about 108,000 in January 2025 and about 97,000 in January 2026123. SG&A expense fell from $12,857 million in fiscal 2024 to $11,416 million in fiscal 20264.
The cuts helped profits: operating income rose from $5,411 million to $8,149 million over the same two years5. But support quality is what keeps a customer renewing, and it is hard to measure from outside until renewals slip.
The risk is that productivity gains in the short run become service gaps in the long run, especially as the installed base of complex AI systems grows faster than the people trained to support them.
The cuts fell on overhead rather than engineering. Research and development spending rose from $2,801 million in fiscal 2024 to $3,142 million in fiscal 2026 while SG&A fell6, and R&D rose 41% in the second quarter of fiscal 20277. Whether support staffing kept pace is not disclosed.
The number that would reveal it is services revenue. Services fell about 4% in fiscal 20268; a continued decline once the VMware resale effect has passed would suggest customers are buying less support because the support is worth less.
