Seventy-Six Percent AmericanNarrow moat

AbbVie (ABBV) — moat facet

Three-quarters of AbbVie's sales are American, and in 2026 it traded price concessions and $100 billion of investment for relief from tariffs.

AbbVie is an American company in the most important sense: most of its money comes from American prices. Net revenues in the United States were $46,603 million in 2025 and international revenues $14,557 million1, so about 76% of revenue was American2. Skyrizi's United States sales alone were $15,202 million3.

Three-quarters from one market.

That concentration is the source of AbbVie's margins. American prices for innovative drugs are the highest in the world, and AbbVie's adjusted gross margin was 84.7% in the second quarter of 20264.

It also concentrates the risk. In January 2026 AbbVie entered a voluntary agreement with the United States government to provide certain pricing concessions and American research and capital investments in exchange for exemptions from tariffs5. The 10-K refers to $100 billion of such investment6. The government that sets the terms of AbbVie's market is also negotiating its prices directly.

International sales are a smaller and more price-controlled business. Growth there was slower: international revenues rose from $12,435 million in 2023 to $14,557 million in 20257.

The American share has been stable. United States net revenues were $41,883 million in 2023 and $46,603 million in 2025, and international revenues $12,435 million and $14,557 million8. Both grew, and the United States grew slightly faster. AbbVie's exposure to American drug pricing policy is not diminishing.

The American share of revenue is the number to watch. A rise above 80% would mean AbbVie is even more exposed to one country's pricing rules, and a fall would mean international growth is diversifying it.
