AbbVie (ABBV) — threat to the moat

AbbVie paid out almost three times its reported earnings in 2025, which is why its equity has turned negative.

AbbVie's dividend exceeds its reported earnings. Dividends declared were $11,819 million in 2025 against net earnings attributable of $4,226 million1, about 2.8 times2. The accumulated deficit widened from $7,900 million to $15,493 million in the year3.

Covered by cash, not by earnings.

The explanation is the non-cash charges: amortisation, contingent consideration changes and acquired research. On cash flow the dividend is covered. But a company that pays more than its accounting earnings for years runs its equity down, and AbbVie's is now negative.

The dividend policy leaves AbbVie less room if cash flow falls, as it would if Skyrizi's growth stalled.

The payout looks very different depending on the measure. Stockanalysis reported a payout ratio of about 195% on trailing earnings4; against free cash flow the 2025 payout was about 65%5. Both are true. The first explains the negative equity; the second explains why the dividend is safe for now.

Dividend coverage by operating cash flow is the test: about 1.6 times in 20256. A fall toward 1.2 would put the record of annual increases at risk.
