Negative Equity After the DealsThin moat

AbbVie (ABBV) — moat facet

AbbVie's equity is negative and its net debt about $64 billion, a balance sheet that works only as long as the cash keeps coming.

AbbVie's balance sheet has an unusual feature for a company this profitable: its equity is negative. Total stockholders' equity was a deficit of $3,270 million at the end of 2025 and $5,935 million at 30 June 202612. A year earlier, at the end of 2024, it had been positive at $3,325 million3.

Balance sheet ($bn)64.3Net debt, June 202619.0Operating cash flow, 2025-5.9Equity deficit, June 2026AbbVie Form 10-K FY2025; Q2 2026 10-Q; net debt calculated
More debt than equity, and more cash flow than both suggest.

The reason is the combination of borrowing to buy Allergan, paying large dividends, and reporting depressed GAAP earnings. The accumulated deficit was $15,493 million at the end of 20254. Dividends declared were $11,819 million in 20255, against net earnings of $4,226 million6.

Debt is large. Long-term debt was $62,481 million and the current portion $8,341 million at 30 June 2026, against cash of $6,569 million7; net debt was about $64.3 billion8. Interest expense, net, was $2,627 million in 20259. The 10-K lists debt obligations that could adversely affect the business among its risk factors10.

Negative equity is not insolvency. AbbVie generated $19,030 million of operating cash flow in 202511, and its earnings before amortisation are large.

The equity turned negative within a year. Total stockholders' equity was a positive $3,325 million at the end of 202412; a year of dividends larger than net earnings took it to a deficit. Nothing about the business changed in that year; the accounting caught up with a policy of paying out cash that GAAP does not count as earned.

A balance sheet like this is a bet on continued cash flow. The ratio to follow is net debt against operating cash flow, about 3.4 years in mid-202613; a rise above 4 while the company keeps buying would narrow its room for the next cliff.

Moat trajectory: Narrowing

Equity fell from +$3.3bn to -$5.9bn in eighteen months; net debt rising.
