⚠ The 2033 CliffHigh threat
AbbVie (ABBV) — threat to the moat
Almost half of AbbVie's revenue depends on two drugs whose main American patents expire in 2033.
AbbVie survived the loss of Humira because its replacements were ready. The same test now has a date: the United States composition of matter patents covering Skyrizi and Rinvoq are expected to expire in 20331, and Rinvoq's generic entry is settled for no earlier than April 20372.
The exposure is larger than it was for Humira in relative terms of growth. Skyrizi and Rinvoq were about 42% of net revenues in 20253 and about 47% in the second quarter of 202645. Management's 2026 plan puts them at about $31.6 billion67.
The Humira precedent shows the shape of the loss: 79% of sales gone within three years of biosimilar entry8. Biologic copies of Skyrizi would likely be sold the same way, through exclusive benefit-manager contracts9.
AbbVie has seven years. Its pipeline of about 90 programmes10, the Apogee acquisition11 and several smaller deals are the plan. None is yet a proven successor.
The Humira precedent also shows how long the warning period is. Humira's American patents were fought over for years before biosimilars arrived in 202312, and in Europe biosimilars had already reached markets representing about 75% of AbbVie's international Humira business by 201813. AbbVie saw the cliff coming for a decade; it will see this one too.
The measure that decides this threat is the share of revenue from drugs protected beyond 2033. If it is below a fifth by 2030, the cliff will arrive with too little ready behind it.
Exposure to the 2033 patent expiry; the higher it goes, the larger the next cliff.
