A Dividend Raised Every Year Since 2013Narrow moat

AbbVie (ABBV) — moat facet

AbbVie has raised its dividend every year since 2013, paying about two-thirds of its free cash flow even through the Humira collapse.

AbbVie has paid and raised a dividend every year since it was spun out of Abbott on 1 January 20131. Cash dividends declared per share rose from $1.75 in 20142 to $5.99 in 2023, $6.29 in 2024 and $6.65 in 20253, and the quarterly dividend was raised from $1.64 to $1.73, about 5.5%4. At $265.12 a share the annual dividend of $6.92 yields 2.61%5.

Nearly four times in eleven years.

The dividend is paid from cash flow, not GAAP earnings. Dividends paid were $11,657 million in 20256, against operating cash flow of $19,030 million and capital spending of $1,214 million7, so about 65% of free cash flow8. Against GAAP net earnings of $4,226 million the payout would be well over 100%, which is why the equity is negative.

The dividend is the promise AbbVie has kept through the Humira cliff. Dividends per share rose about 3.8 times from 2014 to 20259.

It also constrains the company. Cash spent on dividends is not available for acquisitions, which increasingly have to be financed with debt.

The dividend history spans the Humira cliff. Dividends declared per share were $4.84 in 202010, $5.99 in 2023 and $6.65 in 202511, rising in each of the years Humira was falling. Keeping the record through the loss of its largest product was a deliberate choice, and an expensive one.

The share of free cash flow paid in dividends is the figure to watch. A rise above 80% would leave little room for the next cliff; a fall would mean the new drugs are generating cash faster than the dividend grows.

Moat trajectory: Holding steady

Raised about 5.5% for 2026; payout about 65% of free cash flow.

The dividend's claim on cash; above 80% would leave little for acquisitions without borrowing.
