US CommercialNarrow moat
Palantir Technologies (PLTR) — moat facet
Palantir's American commercial business grew from about $200 million to $1.5 billion in four years and is guided to more than double again.
US commercial is the line that turned Palantir from a government contractor into a growth company. It sold $1.465 billion in 2025, up 109%1, about 33% of revenue2, and $764 million in the second quarter of 2026 alone, up 149%3.
Inside it are American companies across what the 10-K has called "approximately 90 industries"4, buying Foundry and AIP. There were 653 such customers in June 2026, up 35%5. Deals range from pilots to multi-year commitments such as a technology company's "three-year contract worth nearly $370 million"6.
The history is short and steep. The line was about $201.0 million in 20217, when Palantir had 80 US commercial customers8. It reached $335.1 million in 2022 and $457.1 million in 20239, and $702.3 million in 202410. Its share of Palantir's revenue went from about 13% in 2021 to about 33% in 2025 and about 39% in the second quarter of 202611.
It is paid mostly as software subscriptions, sold after a pilot that Palantir runs "generally at our own expense and without a guarantee of future returns"12. Expansion follows: net dollar retention across the company was 157%13.
Profit is disclosed only for the commercial segment as a whole, American and international together. Its contribution margin was 66% in 202514 and 78% in the second quarter of 202615, against 64% a year earlier.
Growth has accelerated every year since 2023: about 36% in 2023, 54% in 2024 and 109% in 20251617. The outlook is Palantir's own guide of more than $3.424 billion in 2026, at least 134% growth18, supported by $6,238 million of US commercial remaining deal value19.
The pipeline grew even faster within the quarter. US commercial remaining deal value rose 27% from the first quarter to the second20, which means the backlog was being refilled faster than revenue was drawing it down. That is the condition under which the 2026 guide is conservative rather than stretched.
This is the line on which most of Palantir's valuation rests. The verdict would change if its growth fell below 50% in 2027 while customer count kept rising, because that would show the expansion within accounts, not new logos, had been doing the work and was running out.
Growth accelerated to 149% in Q2 2026.
The growth engine; a fall below 50% in 2027 would mean account expansion is slowing.
