Palantir Technologies (PLTR) — threat to the moat

About a seventh of Palantir's 2025 pretax income was interest on its cash, and investment marks moved its latest quarterly earnings too.

Part of Palantir's net income does not come from software. Interest income on its cash and Treasury holdings was $229.2 million in 20251, about 14% of pretax income2. Other income was $91.8 million in the second quarter of 20263.

A line that grew fourteenfold in a year.

Investment gains add more. On the second-quarter 2026 call management noted that GAAP earnings per share of $0.41 included "a $0.03 tailwind from unrealized gains on SpaceX holdings"4. Palantir held $167 million of privately held equity stakes at 30 June 20265.

None of this is improper; cash earns interest and investments are marked. But interest income falls when rates fall, and unrealised gains reverse. In 2022 Palantir recorded $272.1 million of losses on its investments in marketable securities6.

The interest grows with the pile and shrinks with rates. Cash and short-term Treasury securities rose from $3.7 billion at the end of 20237 to $9.2 billion in June 20268, so interest income has grown with the balance; a fall in short-term rates would reduce it without any change in the software business.

Investors valuing Palantir on earnings should strip these out. The operating margin is the cleaner number: 47% on a GAAP basis in the second quarter of 20269. A widening gap between net and operating margin would mean more of the reported profit is coming from the balance sheet.
