Palantir Technologies (PLTR) — moat facet

Palantir's real competitor is the customer's own engineering department, and the rising customer count says it is winning that argument in America.

Palantir's annual report does something unusual: it names no competing company. It says instead: "We are fundamentally competing with the internal software development efforts of our potential customers."1 It adds that "Organizations frequently attempt to build their own data platforms before turning to buy ours."2 Beyond that, it lists classes of rival: "large enterprise software companies, government contractors, and system integrators"3.

Four kinds of rival, none named.

Those four are four different relationships. The customer's own engineers are a rival inside the customer. Government contractors are both rivals and, until recently, the primes Palantir worked under. System integrators sell the hours that Palantir's software is meant to replace. And large software companies compete on the same factors the 10-K lists, "platform capabilities and product functionality" first and "pricing and cost structures" last4, while Palantir depends on cloud hosting that it rents.

The figures say Palantir is winning these contests in the United States. Total customers were 1,049 in June 2026, up 24%5, and US commercial revenue grew 149% in the second quarter6. They also say it is not winning everywhere: international commercial revenue grew 2.5% in 20257.

Palantir does not disclose market share, and none is available in its filings. That absence matters: a company that cannot point to a share figure is telling investors the market it competes in has no clear boundary.

The 10-K's list of competitive factors also includes "data security and privacy"8. For a supplier to intelligence agencies and health services that factor is a barrier as much as a feature: a rival must pass the same security reviews before it can be compared on anything else, and those reviews take years.

The competitive test is the customer count. If it keeps growing by about a quarter a year, Palantir is converting organisations that would otherwise have built their own; if it stalls while growth comes only from existing customers, the build-it-yourself option is winning the new ones.

Moat trajectory: Widening

Customers +24% to 1,049; US commercial revenue +149% in Q2 2026.

Organisations choosing Palantir over building their own; a stall would mean the do-it-yourself option is winning new customers.
