Stock Pay From 116% of Revenue to 14%Narrow moat

Palantir Technologies (PLTR) — moat facet

Stock pay was 116% of Palantir's revenue in its listing year and 14% in 2026, which is how a loss-making company became a profitable one.

For its first years as a public company, Palantir's largest expense was paying its staff in shares. Stock-based compensation was $1,270.7 million in 2020, about 116% of revenue12, much of it the "recognition of cumulative stock-based compensation expense upon the Direct Listing"3. It was 50% of revenue in 2021 and 30% in 20224.

From more than all revenue to about a seventh.

By 2025 it had become ordinary for a software company. Stock-based compensation was $684.0 million, against $691.6 million in 20245, or 15.3% of revenue6. In the second quarter of 2026 it was $265.2 million, 13.7% of revenue78.

That change is the main reason Palantir became profitable on a GAAP basis. It reported its "First Quarter of Positive GAAP Net Income" in the fourth quarter of 20229 and its first full-year profit, $209.8 million, in 202310.

The cost did not vanish; it was spread over far more revenue. Diluted weighted shares still rose from 1,923.6 million in 2021 to 2,565.2 million in 2025, about 33%1112, and each of those shares is a claim on future earnings.

The turning point came in a single quarter. Palantir's release for the fourth quarter of 2022 was headed "Palantir Reports Its First Quarter of Positive GAAP Net Income"13, with earnings of one cent a share. Every quarter since has been profitable.

Stock pay as a share of revenue is the discipline measure. A figure held near 14% while revenue grows means the dilution is shrinking in relative terms; a return above 20% would say the company is again paying its staff with the owners' equity.

Moat trajectory: Widening

Stock pay 13.7% of revenue in Q2 2026.
