Palantir Technologies (PLTR) — threat to the moat

Palantir's 78% segment margin is measured before research, overhead and stock pay, which together took its 2025 operating margin down to 32%.

Contribution margin is a flattering measure by design. Palantir calculates it after cost of revenue and sales and marketing but before research and development, general and administrative costs and stock-based compensation, which are not allocated to segments1.

Each layer of cost takes a slice.

The gap is large. Total contribution was $2,942.7 million in 2025, a 66% margin2, while GAAP income from operations was $1,414.0 million, 32% of revenue3. Stock-based compensation alone was $684.0 million4.

None of this is hidden; the reconciliation is in the filings. But investors who quote the 78% commercial margin as if it were profit are counting a margin that excludes about half of the company's costs.

The unallocated costs are large in dollars. Research and development of $557.7 million and stock-based compensation of $684.0 million together came to about $1,241.7 million in 202556, and employer payroll taxes on stock pay added $156.1 million7. None of it appears in the segment margins.

The fairer comparison is GAAP operating margin, which rose to 47% in the second quarter of 20268. If the gap between contribution and GAAP margin widens, the unallocated costs are growing faster than the segments; if it narrows, as it has since 2024, the leverage is real all the way down.
