⚠ A Long and Unpredictable Sales CycleLow threat
Palantir Technologies (PLTR) — threat to the moat
Palantir's biggest contracts still take years to win, so a slowdown in buying would reach revenue late.
The bootcamp shortens the first sale, but Palantir's large contracts still take a long time. The 10-K says "our sales efforts involve considerable time and expense and our sales cycle is often long and unpredictable"1.
That matters most in government, where procurement runs on legal timetables and budget years. The US Army's enterprise agreement, for example, consolidated 75 separate contracts into one2, the result of years of individual awards.
A long cycle means revenue can lag demand, and it means a pause in buying shows up late. Palantir could see strong interest in pilots while a slowing of contract awards is still working through the pipeline.
Maven shows how long public programmes take to mature. It began as a five-year contract worth $480 million awarded in May 20243, and the order to make it a program of record came in March 20264. Two years from award to budget line is quick by the standards of defence procurement, and still long by those of software.
The count of customers is the check on this. Total customers were 1,049 in June 2026, up 24%5; if customer additions slow while pilot activity is reported as strong, the cycle has lengthened, and revenue growth will follow it down a few quarters later.
