The Revenue LinesNarrow moat
Palantir Technologies (PLTR) — moat facet
Palantir's government and commercial segments earn the same 66% margin, but the growth is almost all American.
Palantir reports two segments, Government and Commercial, and measures each by contribution: revenue less cost of revenue and sales and marketing, excluding stock pay1. It also discloses US commercial and US government revenue2. The chart in this app splits each segment by geography, giving four lines; the international figures are the segment totals less the American ones3.
In 2025 revenue of $4,475.4 million4 divided into US government $1,855 million, US commercial $1,465 million5, international commercial about $608.2 million and international government about $547.3 million6. The four bands reconcile to reported revenue.
The two segments earn almost the same margin. Government contribution was $1,576.1 million, a 66% margin, and commercial $1,366.6 million, also 66%, in 20257. In the second quarter of 2026 commercial moved ahead: 78% against government's 71%8. In 2018 the margins were 12% and 15%9.
The lines move very differently. In 2025 US commercial grew 109% and US government 55%10; international government grew about 47% and international commercial about 2.5%11. The United States produced 74% of revenue in 202512 and 81% in the second quarter of 202613.
The government lines follow the American budget calendar. Palantir has explained that US government customers have "a fiscal year end of September 30"14, so awards and renewals bunch in the third quarter and delays in appropriations can move revenue between quarters. The commercial lines follow no such calendar.
Profit by geography is not disclosed. The lines describe a company growing fastest where its method works best, at home, with an allied-government business growing behind it and a foreign commercial business that has barely moved. The US share of revenue is the figure to follow: rising further means Palantir's fortunes are tied ever more closely to one country's companies and one country's budgets.
US lines growing 90-149%; international commercial lagging.
How American the business has become; a still-rising share ties Palantir more tightly to one economy and one government.
