Paying for Other People's CloudsNarrow moat
Palantir Technologies (PLTR) — moat facet
Palantir runs wherever its customers want, at the price of $1.76 billion of cloud hosting commitments it must pay regardless.
Palantir sells software, but it increasingly pays for the computers the software runs on. Apollo is one of its four named platforms1, and the company now carries large commitments to the cloud providers that host its customers' work.
Flexibility has a cost that sits on Palantir's balance sheet. At the end of 2025 it had noncancelable purchase commitments of $1,758,951 thousand2, mostly for third-party cloud hosting; the 10-Q describes "non-cancelable purchase commitments related to third-party cloud hosting services"3. Palantir pays those bills whether or not a customer renews.
So far the cost is small against the margin. Gross profit was $3,686.3 million on revenue of $4,475.4 million in 2025, a gross margin of 82% against 80% in 20244. The adjusted gross margin was 86% in the second quarter of 20265.
The trade is deliberate. A customer who does not have to arrange its own hosting has one fewer task standing between it and a larger deployment, and one more thing it would have to rebuild if it left.
Set against the balance sheet, the commitments are manageable. Palantir held $9.2 billion of cash and short-term Treasury securities at 30 June 20266, so its hosting commitments at the end of 2025 equalled about 19% of that cash7. The risk is not solvency but margin, if customers stop paying while the hosting bills continue.
The commitment line is the thing to watch. If purchase commitments grow much faster than revenue, Palantir will have taken on fixed hosting costs ahead of demand; if they grow in step while gross margin stays above 80%, Apollo is doing its job cheaply.
Gross margin rose to 82% in 2025 despite hosting commitments.
Margin after hosting costs; a fall below 80% would mean hosting customers is eating the software economics.
